Are there professional standards for the coaching industry?

Yes, there is a code of ethics, core competencies, accreditation processes and an International Coach Federation (industry association) that promotes the advancement of coaches. If you would like to know more details about this, click here: http://www.coachfederation.org/ICF/

My spouse and I want coaching as a couple.  Would we each have to sign up separately?

No. You are a unit, and will be seen in my system as 1 client. My primary work is with couples, so when I have a session with one of you, it is a session for both of you. Sometimes we may meet 1-on-1, but most likely our sessions will be 2-on-1.

I am married and we need help, but my spouse is not interested in getting help. What can I do?

This is neither uncommon or something that has to keep you stuck in the same old patterns of relating. When either party in a marriage makes a change, it affects the relationship. I often work with only one party at first, and most of the time their spouse joins in at about the 2-month point (some earlier, some later, and a few never join into the process). Even when the resistant spouse never enters into the process, major improvements in the marriage are often accomplished. My specialty is to help marriages thrive, whether I am working with both parties or with only one.

If you coach me for a while, and then my spouse decides to join the process, will there be an additional charge?

Not at all. He or she can join at any point, and I will encourage them to do so. If we need to arrange a few "catch-up sessions" we will do so.

I am divorced and want to learn how to avoid making the same mistakes again. Can you help?

Absolutely! Over the years I have had great success working with singles. I led a program for the Marine Corps that was specifically designed to help single adults learn from and overcome past mistakes, as well as engaging their brains along with their hearts when dating. Your question suggests that you already have a good idea of what went wrong before, but without making strategic "course corrections" it is highly likely that you will find yourself in a similar relationship dynamic again. Don't be discouraged, because we can all make the needed changes. You are wise to evaluate past mistakes and to take positive actions to chart a new course. It is not hard to learn more effective relationship skills. It is also fairly simple to become intentional about the dating and mate selection process.

Where would we get together for coaching?

I have embraced new technologies to make this as convenient as possible. It is now easy to meet together without anyone having to travel! Most of the time I have "virtual" appointments with my clients, many of whom are in another state and a few are in other countries. I have a conference line available, can use Skype, and can also host an online seminar for 1 to 50 attendees. We will first communicate by email or telephone to determine which option best suits you. If any of these technologies seem too difficult at first, I'll walk you through it until you become comfortable with it. This is very convenient for many of my clients because of work schedules, etc. If using the computer instead of a phone, a headset improves sound quality, and can be purchased for around $30. It is amazingly simple to meet this way, avoids time spent on the road, and increases flexibility a great deal. Even if you are off on vacation or a business trip, we can still meet!

Do you hold any in-person coaching sessions?

Yes. We can arrange in-person coaching sessions. Sometimes I have a combination of group coaching and individual coaching sessions. Group coaching is always held in person, such as when I am partnering with a church and holding a series of group coaching sessions there for couples from that church. I might meet in person individually with a couple either before or after the group session; or possibly at different times in that facility. I work from my "home office" inside a barn behind my house. While my office is very nice inside (picture window, built-in book cases, ceiling fan, heat and cooling, etc.), there is no access to a bathroom without walking to the house. Therefore, that is not a great place to meet in person. Other meeting places can be arranged. It is my goal to be flexible and strive to arrange anything that will benefit my clients the most.

How will I know you are the right coach for me?

This is a truly vital issue. During our initial conversations and/or discovery session, one important step is to determine if we are an appropriate fit for each other. I coach a limited number of couples at any given time in individual coaching, and am very involved in helping each couple thrive. It is as important to me as it is to you that we are appropriately paired because I can be most effective with some couples, and not with others. My clear intention is to coach only people who I can genuinely help. These are couples that are ready to build strong marriages by following God's design for marriage; and singles who desire a strong Christian marriage in the future. Therefore, before we enter into a coaching partnership together we will get to know each other some. Please be sure to read the information about me on the "Meet Your Coach" tab and the "My Story" tab in the bar at the top of this page. To start getting to know each other, simply select a time for a discovery session.

How do I get started in the coaching process?

If you are interested in beginning the coaching process, please contact me via (1) email at treasuredrelationships@gmail.com or (2) sign up for your "Complimentary Discovery Session" on the right of this page, or (3) call me directly at (910) 526-5045 (In the event that I can't take your call, please leave a message and I will call you back.)  We will start with an initial "discovery session" (possibly more than one, if needed) to get to know each other and to explore the details of the coaching relationship. Following that session, I will carefully review my notes and the recording of the session to develop a proposed Marital Action Plan (MAP). Then we will meet again to go over your MAP, will modify it as needed, and only after settling on the MAP will we begin coaching. There is no charge for any of the preliminary work. Also, once we begin coaching, something may come up that will require adjusting the MAP some. The MAP is like a roadmap to your destination, but side trips here and there may enhance the journey.

What can I expect from you as my coach?

    I will:
... be a partner in bringing out the best, the deepest, and the truest in you;
... provide safety, encouragement and support; an environment in which you can relax and explore;
... respect the confidentiality of the agreements we make;
... expand your view of what is possible and promote discovery of new insights;
... give you input, straight feedback and operate as a sounding board;
... listen carefully to what you say and ask questions that increase awareness;
... be an on-going resource for you in accomplishing your intentions;
... approach coaching and instruction from a Biblically-based, Christian faith perspective without being pushy about my own theology or dogmatic in any way.

What if we sign up for this and then decide it is not right for us? Do you have a money back guarantee?

Yes, I call it my "participate and get your money back" guarantee. If, within the first month of our coaching relationship, you show up to the calls and participate in the coaching process, you can simply let me know this is not working for you (for any reason or no reason at all) and I will completely refund your money. To honor the coaching agreement and the coaching process, if you sign up and then do not show up for your coaching sessions, do not do the follow up work, etc, then I will not refund your money. This is one way that I will encourage you to participate in the process! Clearly I will not be able to help you if you do not participate; and yet I am confident that when you engage in this process you will see significant progress begin in under 30 days. In the event that this is not the case for you, simply let me know and we will depart as friends, both better off for having had the experience together.

Is the private client portion of the website and my data secured and safe?

Yes! In fact, there are 3 levels of security provided to keep your data safe and confidential:
Username and password protected;
Verisign Security Certificate protects your data on this site;
Secured pages (https://)

Is my information confidential?

Yes. Each client/couple has their own private portal where information shared between us can only be seen by myself and them. And I treat all information shared with me under the guidelines for pastoral confidentiality. Even though coaching is distinctly different from counseling and therapy, I treat your private information just as if it were shared with me as your Pastoral Counselor. I will not share anything with anyone without your written permission to do so.

Can I contact you in-between our scheduled coaching sessions?

Yes! In the event that you would like support on something that comes up between our regular appointments, you can post an inquiry to the Client Log and we can have "just in time" coaching via your Private Client Website or by phone.  I will be your coach all the time during our coaching relationship. Things will come up and you will need some extra support, encouragement, guidance, etc. I will be there for you.

What is the "Register Now" link and when would I use it?

If you are interested in becoming a client or beginning the coaching process, you can create your own account to access the private client area. When you "register" I will be notified that your account has been created and that I will need to activate your account. I will get that done as quickly as possible, but it could take up to 24 hours because I have to manually set things up in the website for you. I am working on making the website more automated, but I'm not there yet.

How do I access your private client area and how do I log in?

Click on the Login link in the navigational menu of the website. Then enter the username and password that has been assigned to you. Don't have login information yet?  Contact me so we can get an account created for you.

I have a password that I use for most of my on-line accounts.  Can I change the password you assigned to me?

Yes. You will need to log in initially using the password I will email to you. Once you log in, you can change your password at any time in your Client Profile page, that you will find under the FORMS tab.

What if I forget or lose my password and login information?

If you simply forgot your password, you can still go to the Login page by clicking the Login link. Click on the blue link "forgot password" to the right of the "Login" button and, in the new "Forgot Password" window, enter your username and click on the "Continue" button. You will receive an automated email shortly with your password included.

If you misplaced both your username and password, contact me and I will have to look it up in the system and forward you your information.

I’m trying to log in, but it will not accept my username or password, what do I do?

Remember that the login information is case sensitive, so enter it exactly like it was given to you. Also, type in your login credentials and DO NOT copy/paste it, as this procedure can include empty spaces, which count in a password, thus rendering it incorrect. Again, if you do not remember your login credentials, you can contact me via email and I'll forward them to you.

What makes up a "Welcome Packet" and what do I do with this?

A welcome packet consists of some basic forms, documents and resources that will help to get us started in the coaching process. By completing the information in the welcome packet, you are providing me with some helpful information, so that I know best how to support you, guide you and work together with you. It includes a "Client Profile" form, a "Goals" form and also a "Discovery" form.  You will also find our coaching agreement located in this packet. It is customary for you to complete these items prior to our initial coaching session together.

What if I need to reschedule my appointment?

It's easy. With at least a 24 hour notice, you can reschedule any appointment by using the online calendar system. Just complete the following steps:
Log into your Private Client Website Area.
Click on the Calendar Menu.
Locate and click on the desired block of “Available” time (or if you already have an existing appointment, click on the title of your existing appointment that you wish to reschedule).
Click on the "edit" button and change the details of the appointment to correspond with an "Available" block of time.
The calendar will update itself, you'll see your new appointment reflected, and I will receive an automated email and text message notification letting me know of the change.

How do I easily make my payments for my coaching services?

Each month you'll receive an invoice from my practice letting you know the amount committed to for that month. You can (1) mail a check to the remit to address located right on the invoice or (2) log in to the private client area, click on the Payments Menu and you will see any outstanding balances due at that time.

What are the various methods of payment I can use to pay for my coaching services?

Check, Cash, Waived, Barter, Credit Card (which includes Pay Pal). You can also have your coach process your payments for you each month on a credit/debit card.

  • To pay by Check: simply use the "remit to" address located to the right in the body of the invoice you’ll receive monthly from my practice.
  • To pay by Credit Card or Pay Pal: when you receive your monthly invoice, click on the link at the bottom of the invoice to log into the private client area and click on the Payments Menu. Here you can either enter your credit card number or Pay Pal information and my system will automatically (and securely) process your payment.
  • To have your coach process your payments for you: Complete the "Credit Card Authorization" form found under the Documents section of the private client area. Once I have the authorization and billing information, I will automatically process your payments for you as outlined in the authorization form.

Important Note about the Website:

As of November 1, 2015, I have begun migrating all of my website functions to a new platform. The old platform will no longer function on December 31st, and will be obsolete due to new security protocols. New clients are starting in the new "Coaches Console Version 3" platform, while others are being transitioned over. I hope this is a seamless process for you, but on my end there are growing pains and many things to get set up correctly. If my instructions say to click on a blue button, but it shows up on your screen in a different color (or you notice some other "glitch"), please send me an email to let me know. There is definitely a learning curve for me as I adjust to the new program. However, in this time of online security threats, it is necessary to stay current with the technology. And "Version 3" is a completely new platform instead of an adjustment. The more I learn about this new platform, the better I like it because there are lots of new functions that I will be taking advantage of in the months ahead. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

“Most Valuable Decision”

Prior to coaching with Dave, I would lay awake at night worrying about our relationship struggles.  There were haunting questions about what could I have done differently to prevent the demise of the relationship and what could I do to improve the relationship, if possible.  That was when a decision to get help to put things into perspective had to be made.  The decision to seek coaching was one of the most valuable ones I have ever made.  Dave was very approachable and understanding.  His responses to my questions and issues seemed to always be on target.  The experience made sense to me in that he did not spout psychobabble or give a canned response learned from a book.  I deeply appreciated the fact that he genuinely listened, was reflective and thought provoking.  Now we have made much better decisions, moved on from the past, and gained a greater sense of peace which is very helpful.  Now we are doing well, are very happy, and continue toward building a great marriage.
